Kids love to make things. At least my kids love to make things! We ventured into something new these past couple of weeks to pass the time during these cold spring days here in Chicago. Woodworking!
When I was in junior high I had to take a wood working class (do they even offer these types of classes any longer in schools??), but I don't think I was very good. I also had a very handy father who literally could build anything out of anything. I thought messing around with some wood would be a great spring project for my girls.

This was a great indoor activity for my girls and I to bond and for the girls to bond as sisters this spring. They worked well together and took turns hammering and lining up the wood pieces for their specific projects. The instructions showed each step of the building in clear, up-close diagrams, so I really only needed to supervise and encourage my girls. They only asked me for assistance a couple of times and I think that is because I am a bit stronger than they are.
I was so pleased with the Build-It-Yourself Woodworking Kit because it took my daughters away from all their media obsessions. I was happy to get them away from these unproductive activities and get them involved in doing something productive.
If you are looking for a great spring project for your children and you want to limit media, I would recommend a small projects like building a birdhouse. It doesn't have to be built in a single day either. You and your children can follow the instructions and complete the project in time for the birds to lay their eggs! Woodworking is a great opportunity to teach needed skills, responsibility and finishing tasks. And, your kids will pick up a new productive hobby!
